"Nobody" rides Amtrak's long-distance trains? Tell the AP

which reports that floods temporarily stranded the Sunset Limited about 75 miles west of San Antonio. AP reports 176 people on board.

One hundred seventy six.

That's on the Sunset, a train regularly derided as some kind of poster child for Amtrak's network of supposedly empty long-distance trains.

Well, what's empty today?

Actually there were 275 people aboard acording to NARP, the initial count didn't include the Texas Eagle (421) passengers.

The Sunset Limited is a historic and potentially profitable Amtrak route that served thousands of passengers in the Southeast US before Katrina and has not yet been repaired.

For years, at the mercy of Washington politics, it has valiantly struggled with funding issues and not given the support or the chance to implement innovations that could make it profitable.

Train travel is important to the American people, especially in areas where there are few alternatives. These communities suffer without long distance trains.

Investment in preserving the Sunset Limited, and Amtrak in general, profitably should be the goal.
